This is a tradition that is lost in time and that crosses several generations. The Population of Saímes, in Espadanedo, fulfills the tradition and annually erects a giant arch in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. The construction of the imposing arch with about 40 meters mobilizes dozens of people who work hard over several weeks until the most awaited day arrives, the so-called “Saturday of the party”, where the majestic arch is erected thanks to the strength of the arms of more than a hundred people who, count only with the help of a tractor and some steel cables. This wood-built arch is ornamented with paper cut out by the women over several weeks and then glued together the week before the feast day with a paste made of wheat flour. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes is mandatory, as well as the coats of arms of the municipality of Cinfães and the Parish Council of Espadanedo. The Route of the Romanesque, peace in the world and the love of the inhabitants of Espadanedo to its parish are some of the themes represented in the arch.
